Ministry of Defence Website Goes Down

Ministry of Defence website was hacked on Friday evening. Later, websites of the ministries of home, law and labour and six other departments were also down.

The mod.gov.in website displayed an error message and carried what seemed to be some Chinese characters on top, sparking speculation of a cyber attack from the northern neighbour.

According to ANI, Mandarin characters were appearing on the website homepage. The MOD’s website (https://mod.gov.in/) as of now cannot be reached.

“The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later” message is being flashed on the home page.”

The display logo on the MoD website on Friday had triggered speculation.

Ministry of Defence Website Down

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharam said:

The website will be restored shortly. “Action is initiated after the hacking of the website. The website shall be restored shortly. Needless to say, every possible step required to prevent any such eventuality in the future will be taken she said.”

“A private IT professional said hardware failure could be due to multiple reasons such as power failure or backup not working.”

“Any change to be made on MoD website has to be done through Drupal and its not an alarming situation. Seems to be a one time glitch.”
