Tor Browser for Android 1.0a2 is now available on the Google Play Store and also available from the Tor Browser Project page. The TOR (The Onion Router) Browser is a open source software for allowing anonymous communication. It uses a network of encrypted servers that bounce requests around multiple intermediate links, hiding your IP address and identity. It can help journalists or activists avoid government monitoring, for instance.
Isabela Bagueros (Executive Director of Tor Project) Said:
“Mobile browsing is increasing around the world, and in some parts, it is commonly the only way people access the internet. In these same areas, there is often heavy surveillance and censorship online, so we made it a priority to reach these users.”
“While there are still feature gaps between the desktop and Android Tor Browser, we are confident that Tor Browser for Android provides essentially the same protections that can be found on desktop platforms.”
How to connect to the Tor network on Android without the use of this official Tor Android app:
- Install Orbot and create a proxy connection on your Android device
- Install an unofficial version of the Tor browser from the Guardian Project
- Use Orfox to connect to the Tor network without using a Tor browser
According to THN post, Access to Tor anonymity network was previously available on Android mobile operating system only through other apps or browsers like Orbot/Orfox app, but you can now use the official Tor Browser built on Firefox on your mobile device. The Tor Project also declared the release of a couple of new features in the latest Tor Browser version, like extra tabs, new logos, and user interface improvements.
So far, there is no official Tor Browser version for iOS, but the Tor Project recommends that iOS users install Mike Tigas’ Onion Browser iOS app if they want to use Tor on iOS.
